Capturing memories through scent
At Mal du Pays, it’s our mission to draw attention to the under-appreciated sense of smell. We believe that olfaction is an especially poignant and unique means of accessing personal memories. By incorporating fragrance into our floral designs, we create gorgeous sensory experiences for our clients to experience in the moment and later, to transport them back to emotionally profound moments in their lives.
One of Emily’s formative scent-memories dates back to a family wedding in 1991. The bride, Aunt Elaine, wore a veiled sunhat and carried a wonderfully fragrant bouquet of gardenias. When she tossed the bouquet, it sailed right over the head of five-year-old Emily and was caught effortlessly by an older boy. The superstition about being the next to marry did not interest her, but the flowers did! Emily was heartbroken she’d lost out on this prize. After shedding a few tears, the boy kindly offered the bridal bouquet to her. Moved by this gesture, she reveled in the scent of the blooms. To this day, the fragrance of gardenias brings back memories of this celebratory day and the excitement of receiving a special gift.
Local, seasonal flowers are the perfect medium for creating a fragrant “time capsule.” Typically picked less than 48-hours before going into your design, these fresh cut stems are redolent with the nuances of the natural garden. Imported flowers simply cannot compete in this department. Consider that over time, fragrance has been bred out of imported crops, sacrificed for genetics that give these flowers a more homogeneous appearance and durability. Scent-lovers (and environmentally conscious consumers) are wise to partner with a farmer-florist.
We love to design floral arrangements for weddings, memorials, and special occasions with the enchanting power of scent memory in mind. We’ll incorporate your favorite notes into your bridal bouquet, whether its heady tuberose or the gourmand perfume of chocolate cosmos; and we’ll tuck sprigs of savory garden herbs or old-fashioned garden roses into sympathy arrangements to evoke sweet memories of your loved one. It’s our hope that future encounters with these botanicals will evoke a special nostalgia.
